BIOGRAPHY

Åsa Maria Hedberg, born 1972 in Härnösand, Sweden is a full time artist / ceramicist / glass artist who graduated from the University of Sunderland, UK (2007) after studies in Swedish universities and University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Her MFA is from Novia University of Applied Sciences, Finland (2016). She is educated as an arts teacher.

Works of Hedberg are called involvations, the vision being to enable sites for human interaction and mental somersaults. Her works encourages interaction with the art work it self and among the visitors. Themes of interest include inclusion/exclusion, possibilites for change and transition to a more sustainable future, using both playful magic and high/low tech machinery. The notion of the circle as physical and psycological structure is of interest for her experimentation and research.

Many of Hedbergs works are large scale public site specific commissioned art works, but has lately redesigned her working practice towards freelancing and more indipendent work. Her works are to be found in private and public collections. The more temporary works are made from wet clay, molten glass, fire and more as the practice of Hedberg is based in a tactile and material expression.

Åsa Maria is currently based in a village upnorth in Sweden in Hammerdal where she is also the founder of LOKSTALLET fire and heART – a public art centre in the making, in an old train car house. She is also the initiator of KulTur Jämtland-Härjedalen yearly open studio event and sometimes curates her collegues in projects such as the online dialog hjART.nu
